Helvetica – A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit
Dec 18th
HELVETICA FILM CLIPS ARE UP
Just wanted to let you know that we’ve uploaded a few Quicktime video clips from Helvetica on the website. It’s tough to get the feel for a 85-minute feature film in a few minutes, but hopefully these will give you a taste. We’ve put up a snippet of our interview with Dutch design legend Wim Crouwel, a beautiful piece of footage from the streets of Berlin that segues into part of Erik Spiekermann‘s profile, a few minutes with Amsterdam-based design team Experimental Jetset, and a clip featuring Neville Brody and Rick Poynor discussing type’s subliminal influence.
Hope you enjoy them. We’ll have a few more clips, a proper trailer, and news on our 2007 world premiere and screening dates soon.
Cheers,
-Gary

NEW MTV ENTERTAINMENT GROUP, The Machine is Closing In…
Dec 12th
New MTV Group Focuses on Comedy, Web/Mobile/TV Synergies
For the 1st time, a show has jumped from cellphone to basic cable. The political comedy, ""Lil’ Bush: Resident of the United States," produced by Amp’d Mobile, has been bought by Comedy Central.
Move is indicative of new strategies at parent Viacom’s new MTV Entertainment Group, which includes numerous websites and Comedy Central, Spike and TV Land. It also includes Atom Films and iFilm, both acquired in 2005 by Viacom, now all under former Comedy Central head Doug Herzog.
Atom Films has been re-launched this week as a home for short-form independent comedy and incubator for MTV Networks on TV. Sister service iFilm, in contrast-itself re-launched last month-is now positioned as mix of YouTube-like video portal and showcase for various bigger budget MTV Networks clips (such as "The Daily Show.") MTV plans to roll out 20 or more niche broadband channels in 2007, all swapping content, serving as minor leagues to the TV big time and ancillary markets for much of that TV content.

INFORMATION DESIGN

Saw this on the NYT site. Interesting and frightening at the same time for those of us who got into the housing market in the early part of this century.
Just remember folks, all data can be arranged to prove any point of view. Discounting the value of new housing starts significantly alters the outcome of this chart. But it is still interesting to see…
GOODBYE POWERPOINT
Aug 28th
Last weekend I attended a seminar called Ideas into Action put on by none other than my own brother, Joseph Flahiff, senior project manager at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The idea behind the seminar was to give artists some project management tools to help them manage anything from a large art project, to their art career.
It was a great two days, and I am a very proud big brother. And then this morning I ran across this article from Micro Persuasion on turning your iPod into a presentation device.
They give the technical info in the article, but the gist of it is that you don’t have to pack your laptop all over the place. You can travel, practice, and present right from your iPod, which is pretty cool.
Now we just need a more convenient way to hook the thing up to the board room AV systems. It’s just a matter of time. Resistance is futile.

Technical “Opportunities”

Today our trusty Titanium G4 is being reformatted; writing zeros on thirty-five passes. I started the process this morning and it still reads "7 hours to go."
If only we could upgrade to Leopard today; some great new features to play with like spaces.
This cool new feature should be a boon to freelancers everywhere who, while they appear to be working onsite for one client [given the fact that they are sitting at that client's computer] are actually working on another client’s project. We are certain this never happens here…
