"It is possible that we are in the process of experiencing a new relationship between art and practice. Alarm clocks ring sixty seconds every minute, works of art follow reality, again calling for a hundred flowers to appear, things fall apart. The arts are entering the space outside themselves, looking hard to the future. It is an all-out search. Many see a state of emergency. What now is the role of the artist?"
on news stands now…
Catherine Sullivan’s “Triangle of Need” to Premiere @ Walker Art Center
Aug 9th
One of the most interesting artists working today, Catherine’s work is intellectually rigorous, aesthetically lush, and often more than a little perplexing. Expect nothing less from the sound of this new, multi-channel piece set to premiere the end of this month. Get there any way you can! I will…
Congratulations Catherine!
From the press release:
August 23-November 18
Triangle of Need Examines Wealth and EvolutionWhat do the Neanderthals have in common with an early 20th-century American industrialist? What are the connections between Nigerian cinema and a sprawling mansion comprising four centuries of architectural styles? These are some of the elements—physical and conceptual—that make up Catherine Sullivan’s new film project making its world premiere August 23 (beginning at 5 pm) through November 18 in the Walker Art Center exhibition Catherine Sullivan: Triangle of Need. In the multichannel video installation Triangle of Need, Sullivan orchestrates complex sets of ideas and participants to weave a nuanced story about evolution, class, wealth and poverty, and the inequalities and injustices in our global economy. The project is co-commissioned by the Walker, A Foundation (Liverpool), and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (Miami), and will be presented in Liverpool (October 2007) and Miami (December 2007). The Minneapolis presentation is organized by Walker visual arts curator Doryun Chong…
Bat For Lashes – What’s a Girl To Do
Aug 1st
So much bad news lately. Dark times. Lately we’ve been feeling, well, like this:
Theresa Duncan, 1966 – 2007 You will be Missed…
Jul 31st
As many of you know already, Theresa Duncan, author, filmmaker and bon vivant frequently qouted here in (incli)NATION was found dead in her NYC apartment by her longtime boyfriend Jeremy Blake, July 10th of this year. A detailed suicide note was left behind. Sadly, Jeremy took his own life a week later. While there is much speculation surrounding this tragedy, we at (incli)NATION would simply like to wish them both well, wherever they are.
Walk Between the Raindrops
(read at Theresa’s graveside at the close of
her funeral)
A shadow crossed the blue Miami sky
As we hit the causeway by the big hotel
We fought
Now I can’t remember why
After all the words were said and tears were gone
We vowed we’d never say goodbye
When we kissed we could hear the sound of thunder
As we watched the regulars rush the big hotels
We kissed again as the showers swept the Florida shore
You opened your umbrella
But we walked between the raindrops back to your door
In my dreams I can hear the sound of thunder
I can see the causeway by the big hotels
That happy day we’ll find each other on that Florida shore
You’ll open your umbrella
And we’ll walk between the raindrops back to your door…

Abréger son souper, c’est allonger sa vie.
Jul 27th
Abréger son souper, c’est allonger sa vie. [To shorten one's supper, is to lengthen one's life.]

The original quote, “To lengthen thy life, lessen thy meals,” is from Benjamin
Franklin’s book “Poor Richard’s Almanack” which by the way is a particularly useful little tome which sits on my bedside table but it is unfortunately usually buried beneath a pile of half-read books, magazines and crossword puzzles…
If your not successful simply walking away from the bounty, simply refuse to eat sugar or carbs and see how quickly your appetite dissapears. (worked for me anyway)
Info-graphic Music Video by Sarah McLachlan “World on Fire”
Jul 24th
Another highlight from our wanderings in the info-graphic world this week; an info-graphic music video featuring Sarah McLachlan’s "World on Fire". Fabulous use of graphics and stock ftg. Yes, we are not alone.
from infoaesthetics: at the cost of $15 for this whole video, I guess the infographics were designed for free.

Culebras and Lacan
Jun 5th
This one’s not too tough to figure out now is it?
By the way, this is what seriouscigars.com says of the infamous ‘culebra’ now being rolled at Drew Estate:
"It has always been tradition to allow cigar rollers one cigar per day to smoke. As a trick, master rollers began rolling the Culebra, which is two or more cigars twisted together. Medusa is our newest creation in which our most masterful rollers carry on this time-honored tradition. Be warned, however, when Medusa casts her spell on you, you will be drawn to her rich, intense aromas. Each Medusa comes in it own box. Medusa is part of the Virgin Cuban Seed line which is marked by heavy fermentation which makes this line ddeply rich with leathery and smokey flavor of dark coffee."
Mine are on order…
‘Who are you going to believe, your eyes, or my words?’
May 15th

“In one of the Marx brothers’ films, Groucho, when caught in a lie, answers angrily: ‘Who are you going to believe, your eyes, or my words?’ This apparently absurd logic renders perfectly the functioning of the symbolic order in which the social mask matters more than the direct reality of the individual who wears it. This function involves the structure of what Freud called ‘fetishist disavowal’: ‘I know very well that things are the way I see them, that the person in front of me is a corrupted weakling, but I nonetheless treat him respectfully, since he wears the insignia of a judge….’ So in a way, I do believe his words, not my eyes.”

A Tree Within
May 3rd
A tree grew inside my head.
A tree grew in.
Its roots are veins,
its branches nerves,
thoughts its tangled foliage.
Your glance sets it on fire,
and its fruits of shade
are blood oranges
and pomegranates of flame.
. . . . . Day breaks
in the body’s night.
There, within, inside my head,
the tree speaks.
. . . . . Come closer – can you hear it?

High Desert Test Sites (HDTS): 5/12-13 2007
May 1st
So now that it is nearly time to make the trek out to the desert for the annual HDTS events, we thought we’d tempt you with a little taste of what to expect. Don’t think about it, just go! It’s important…
This from WGSN:
"A truly beautiful and mesmerising piece – a playful and humorous artwork that also makes the viewer question his surroundings," wrote WGSN’s LA correspondent Sally Lohan after stumbling upon Sarah Vanderlip’s Glimmer Egg during a visit to The High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree."
And from the HDTS release:
"Our more streamlined and intimate event this year means less time in the car and more time sitting in the sunshine, conversing at the saloon, or cooling of in a hotel pool. It will be like the early days at HDTS when the adventure was the event. Make hotel or camping reservations early as most accommodations are already filling up!
Participants include:
a waving flag by David Shrigley
a disappearance and reappearance by Rodney McMillian
a living thing by Liz Larner
a fierce dog by Julia Scher
a Polish Western by Piotr Uklanski
a stage presence by John Bock
a bikini performance by Ann Magnuson
a small business by Lisa Anne Auerbach
a roadside sign by Jack Pierson
some Wagon Station Customizations at A-Z West
a swap meet organized by Amy and Wendy Yao (check out the swapmeet blog!)
winding down with the afternoon rock star event at the Art Queen.
In addition to the driving tour there will be four meeting points/times throughout the weekend: Maps will be available on May 12th and 13th from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the HDTS HQ, directly south of Coyote Corner on Park Drive in downtown Joshua Tree.
