And you thought Tokyo was fantastic on the surface! Just have a look at what’s under your feet: miles of cathedral-like sewers. A neo-gothic labyrinth of engineering wonder! I just wonder if they ever fill all the way up!

I was absolutely wrong about these! This is Kasukabe and a storm drain at that. Still an awesome space though. Here is a press release:

SAITAMA (Kyodo) An underground tunnel built to take in river
water overflow and release it into another river to mitigate flood
damage was shown to the media Monday in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture.

The 6.3 km long conduit is 50 meters underground in Kasukabe and connects the Otoshifurutone and Edo rivers.

If the Otoshifurutone River or nearby Naka River flood, excess
water can be channeled into the tunnel from five locations and
temporarily stored in a gigantic reservoir before being pumped up and
released into the Edo River.

The water chamber, dubbed the “underground palace,” features 59
columns, each 25 meters high, that can store 670,000 cu. meters of
water, according to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.

The government project began in 1993 with a budget of 240
billion yen, and part of the tunnel became ready for use in 2002. The
system will begin full operation in June.

Historically, the eastern part of Saitama Prefecture has been
prone to floods. The government says the flood-management system will
significantly reduce the danger of floods in the area.

Kim Joon, Bird Land-Armani (detail), 2008

Just got this great summary from Artkrush who will be on the scene again this year bringing you all the goodness to be found. Be sure to keep checking back as the month develops…

"?Talk
of bursting bubbles and crashing markets has bled through the front
page and into the art sections of today's news. And so, as crates of
canvas arrive in Miami postmarked from around the world, the most
coveted position available in today's art world is that of the
spectator."

"Pockets will be substantially lighter at this year's Miami
Basel, but there will be no shortage of eye candy for those of us just
coming to look. As usual, Artkrush provides a tidy honor roll of our
personal favorites, with special attention paid to Art Basel Miami Beach, as well as Scope and Photo Miami contributor Julia Fullerton-Batten, a London photographer whose studies of adolescence picture girls looming larger than life, suspended in midair, and lost
in the uniform masses. Meanwhile, Artkrush editor Paul Laster connects with the Campana Brothers in Brazil to discuss the latest installment in their sci-fi furniture design series TransPlastic, included this year in Design Miami/. Across the bay from ABMB, we highlight the stylish counter-culture publications of

Now that the turkey is eaten and we have hundreds of digitals pics that we don't know what to do with, and now that Polaroid is a thing of the past, why not go for the washed-out, greenish Polaroid look, sans the waving, rubbing and otherwise useless efforts to get the thing to develop.

Now we can get our fix at Poladroid, a new site dedicated to turning all your pristine digital photographs into terrible-looking, but nostalgic versions of their former selves.

From the website:

• Easy to use : Drag & Drop
• Generate High-resolution pictures (400 dpi), "ready-to-print" with a Polaroid design
•
Funny : only 10 treatments per session, like the content of a cartridge
; interactive (look at the demo below) ; random and realistic
Polaroid-like colors variation…
• and more…
Have fun !!! ;)

now go have some fun!

Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt sitting for a portrait no doubt but they both seem miles away, absorbed in the intimacy of touch. She is reading his palm and as I lacerated my own right hand in a fit of rage last night and ended up in urgent care, I am particularly sensitive to the fragility of my body and indeed my life…

A major force in establishing Vancouver’s reputation as a centre for contemporary photographic art, Arden has exhibited his work internationally for more than 30 years. Roy Arden, comprising more than 120 photographs, five video works and a recent Internet project, explores the diverse strategies of the artist’s practice from the early 1980s to the present. Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, the exhibition is guest curated by Dieter Roelstraete of the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art (MuHKA)."

It’s a wonderful introduction to his work just as Barns’ show is opening in NYC.. Be sure to check it out if you are in the city this month:

As regular readers know, I have a fascination with ‘the sentence’ – the shorthand summation everyone uses to describe a particular person. Some are easy (“He’s the guy that photographs Weimaraners). But Barnes is a tricky case. I doubt people would remember ‘He’s an architectural photographer who’s done fine art projects on birds, museums and the Unabomber.’ Whatever the phrase is, Barnes was able to sum up his achievements with a remarkably elegant sentence: “My work is all about containment.” He went on to say that he’d only made this connection in the last few years.

For me this was the ultimate lesson that Barnes brought to the class. While it may not always be great marketing, artists should be free to explore whatever quickens their pulse. Over the long haul they will inevitable find a thread that unifies their vision. Finding this revelatory thread (and not the stupid ‘sentence’) seems to be one of the most meaningful experiences to come from a life making art.

An exhibition of Richard Barnes’ work will open on this Saturday, September 15th, at the Hosfelt Gallery in New York. "
