Scott Short Untitled (white), 2005 oil/canvas 82" x 60" |
|
|
Chicago-based painter Scott Short (USA, b. 1964) has a simple and highly refined method for arriving at abstract compositions. He places a piece of colored construction paper on the scanning bed of a black and white photocopier and makes a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy, a couple hundred times. Within a few generations the photocopied images become monotonous fields of black and white static which Short faithfully and painstakingly reproduces on canvases varying in size. This very restricted economy provides Short a wealth of visual effect in which value, arrived at through the textural interplay of black and white, becomes as rich and complex a phenomenon as color itself. The opening reception is on Sunday January 7, 2007, from 4pm to 7pm, with a public-discussion with the artist from 5pm to 6pm. |

Seattle Windstorm Damage 2006
Jan 1st
We have not been posting much lately because trees were only removed from our neighborhood last week. Power and heat are back on! A Big shout-out to my brother for putting us up when we were homeless.
Check out the size of these things!

Blow, blow, thou winter wind, Thou art not so unkind As man's ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then, heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky, That does not bite so nigh As benefits forgot: Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As friend remembered not. Heigh-ho! sing . . . by William Shakespeare |

Flahiff in Free Press, Stockholm
Dec 19th
And now for some blatant self-promotion: Sal Randolph’s Free Press Project continues it’s viral life. Here are a few pics of the opening show at Roda Sten. The show has moved on to Stockholm for "Labyrinth" an international art-book show. My text is titled "The Program." It’s funny.
TEXTE ZUR KUNST – PORNO feat. Diedrich Diederichsen
Dec 14th
Looks like my favorite cultural/music critic and avant-tard extraordinaire, Herr Diederichsen, is at it again. [at a bar in Pasadena, mid-90s, he said to me, after noting my faded SUBPOP t-shirt, "That's great. You are wanting to make the ironic revival of grunge before it even dies..." Uh, yeah. Actually, I thought it was cool...]
can’t wait to read his latest!

MOST LITERATE CITY IN AMERICA

The rankings, now in their fourth year, aim to rate the 70 largest U.S. cities not on whether their residents can read, but whether they do.
It considers several measures in six categories: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment and Internet resources.
Rankings have remained stable despite some minor reshuffling from year to year. Nine of the top 10 are in the top 10 again this year. Boston fell from seventh to 11th place. Stockton, Calif., and El Paso again come in last and next-to-last, respectively.”

UPGRADE SEATTLE: LARSEN & WALKER @ 911 Media Arts Center
Dec 13th
Party on tomorrow night! If you are going to be in Seattle tomorrow night, you should try and stop by 911 Media Arts and catch the work of Larsen and Walker and their talk.
It’s too bad it is at the same time as the closing party at the Henry, but I’m going to try to hit them both. Yes, I want it all, damnit!
